Apple's latest darling the Retina Display powered MacBook Pro has captured the attention of fans worldwide. The popularity of the laptop's new Retina Display features may be taking away resources for the next generation of iMacs.
Scheduled to hit stores later this fall, Apple's 2012 iMac is rumored to make its debut without the Retina Display feature. The last major upgrade made on Apple's desktops were nearly two years ago. Fans of the iMac may feel neglected when compared to its sister product MacBook Pro.
Why neglect the Retina Display on the iMacs? Apple may be looking to ship out the products sooner than later. According to Instapaper developer Marco Arment, the cost of high pixel density screens are still expensive and having to wait for the technology pricing to drop would mean missed opportunities to sell units during the summer. Getting Apple's iMac and Pro models updated with the new displays would require higher costs to mass produce.
The high demand and short supply are also affecting Apple's manufacturing and inventory of high resolution panels. It appears that the priority is first supplying MacBook Pros with the Retina technology.
Based on leaked specs, the new iMac model is named "iMac 13,2," and runs on a 3.4 GHz Core i7-3770 quad-core processor with 4GB of 1600 MHz RAM. The new computers will utilize OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Users opting to have retina display can look to Apple's next-generation MacBook Pro. Though much heftier on the pricing scale, one can expect a polished design on an ultra-thin professional laptop. The new MacBook Pro comes powered by Intel Core i7 running up to speeds of 2.7GHz, 6MB of shared L3 cache, and can speed it up to 3.7GHz with the addition of Turbo Boost. Based on new Kepler architecture technology, the 1GB video memory combined with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics processor offers up to 60% improved graphics performance.
Due to high demand, customers ordering a Macbook Pro can expect to wait for Apple to catch up with production. Those ordering online were told that their laptops will be shipped in three-four weeks.
