Songs of Conquest Launches Version 1.0 Update After 2 Years in Early Access on Steam

Songs of Conquest is a fantasy, turn-based strategy game that just launched its version 1.0 update after spending two years in early access on Steam.

The game, brought by developer Lavapotion, takes inspiration from various classics in the genre, such as Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilization VI. Songs of Conquest puts players in control of magicians which can be moved around the map.

You will be able to recruit troops and take on a variety of challenges through hex-based tactical combat while looking at stunning pixel-art fantasy maps.

The game combines RPG and strategy elements that it has accurately recreated to let players feel like they're playing the original Heroes of Might and Magic games.

Other than the battles, players will also have to look after their own cities and build them to reflect the style of warfare that they want to focus on.

This is probably one of the areas where the game part ways with the classics and provides a new opportunity for players to customize their armies, according to PCGamesN.

In older titles, players would have been given a relatively standard and unchangeable upgrade path but in Songs of Conquest, you are offered more freedom in choosing your buildings. This particular feature lets you have more flexibility in how to manage your army composition.

Songs of Conquest's version 1.0 update also expands the game with the addition of a brand-new campaign. This makes a total of four for players to choose from and explore which are all part of an interconnected overarching narrative.

The game features a lot of different challenge maps where players can test their resolve in that range from the impish to the outright fiendish.

The developer has also released various recent updates that focused on improving the game's AI. This has given players more varied opponents with several new difficulty levels.

Taking Inspiration From Classic Strategy Games

Spending two years in early access has been beneficial for Songs of Conquest and given its already strong strategy fundamentals, it just kept on improving. The campaigns each have four very long and elaborate levels, said Rock Paper Shotgun.

The latest update also brings multiple skirmish modes that have preset or randomized maps and have an interesting option to have "find the object" as a win condition. When selected, this changes the game's focus and makes it an exploration where you fight side battles instead of a direct massacre.

The magicians that players control can hoover things up on a big world map, which is important because it gives experience points, resources, and artifacts that boost your wielders' powers. The game's sound effects also make the simple act of gathering resources quite rewarding.

In Songs of Conquest, players will have limited movement points that can be used to either liberate a new resource, pick up some treasure, get a temporary power-up, or fight in battle.

Whenever you engage in conflict, your troops will trade blows and you can choose spells that your magician can cast to turn the tide of battle, according to Ars Technica.
