NieR Developers Tease New Project That May or May Not be Related to the Franchise

The game director of the NieR franchise along with some other developers has teased a new project that may or may not be related to the series itself.

Yoko Taro and other key people behind the highly popular action-role-playing franchise are reportedly working on something together. They are leaving much of it up in the air as to what it could actually be,

NieR series producer Yosuke Saito was the one who actually teased the new project and involves him and composer Keiichi Okabe. Saito said that he had been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for quite some time now.

He added that he will have something a bit more put-together to say in the "not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned." The post also had the word "Laughs" in brackets, which is basically a marketing strategy to generate hype about the project itself, according to VG247.

The announcement naturally resulted in internet debates among users who discussed whether or not the project might actually be related to the NieR franchise.

However, there were some users who pointed out that this could very well be the same work in development that Taro and Saito mentioned when they appeared at the Korean gaming event G-STAR last year.

At the time, the two had also used the same vague and mysterious terms to describe their new project even if it was suggested that it was separate from the NieR franchise. Saito also noted that as long as Yoko is alive, there will be NieR games in the future even if they are not coming out anytime soon.

Saito also said that he is currently doing various things in the gaming industry in the hopes of creating something that does not exist yet. He added that he cannot devote his time to the new project fully, which leaves it in the hands of staff, said GamesRadar.

The announcement of the new project comes as NieR: Automata was first released in February 2016 and was the latest mainline entry in the franchise. Hope for a new game has also been back and forth.

A Potential Mainline Entry to the Franchise

In November 2023, Saito said that Square Enix will definitely make another NieR game at some point in the future. But in March 2024, Taro had seemingly teased a third game through a subtle concert message.

NieR: Automata was considered a standout success for Square Enix thanks to its strong critical reception and sales to match. Some of the reviews said that the game was a great action-role-playing title that featured beautiful locations and zany, fun-filled combat, according to IGN SEA.

Saito's work on the new project alongside other NieR developers comes as he has also been chosen to take over as Dragon Quest's series producer. This was based on a report that claimed that the franchise's current series producer was stepping down at Square Enix.

Leading both the Dragon Quest and NieR franchises may be somewhat of a tall order for some and could result in the new project seeing some delays in the near future. This is true even for a veteran producer such as Saito.
